Thermometer is an instrument used to measure temperature.

In a vessel, it is important to have an instrument that can measure the temperature of sea surface. Commonly used thermometer on the ship is the “bucket instrument” method which is the simplest and most probably the most effective method of sampling. Due to the advancement of the technology newly-built vessels today has hull-attached thermometers that provides input digitally.

PRINCIPLES OF THERMOMETER

A thermometer is consist of a glass tube sealed with both ends, a liquid such as alcohol or mercury, and a label or scale indicated on the glass tube.

When the liquid inside the glass tube gets hotter, it expands (increase in size) by an amount that’s directly related to the temperature. Measurement then can be obtained through the scale or label on the glass tube.

How to Read a Thermometer

· Most thermometers have two temperature scales: Fahrenheit and Celsius.

· When you read the temperature on a thermometer, it should be vertical and your eyes should be level with the top of the liquid in the glass tube.

· Avoid handling the thermometer when you take your readings. The heat from your finger may be transferred to the thermometer.

· The liquid inside the glass tube expands as it is heated and rises in degrees Fahrenheit or Celsius that can be read on the scale.
